trends in the artworld typically have a lot less to do with art or art
movements (though
granted without them there wouldn't be much in the way of ) and more to do
with various
sociopolitical issues, which are much more tough to react against or rally
for or what have
you. so many people don't know what to believe and/or so many people do not
have any
beliefs to rally behind, and so it is arguably harder to create art that is
new and is pertinent
to the times and eco-geo-political-socio-climate (HAHA)... hmmm... well, i
guess what i mean
is that things just aren't so clear cut anymore as they were even as recently
as the middle
of this century.... things have changed so radically that the definitions of
art must even be
reconsidered. that is why we have jokers (or geniuses?) like damien hirst
around to do things
with dead animals... it's a very easy way to get a reaction from people, and
they don't have
to be educated or understand where you're coming from to react to it.
i don't mean to underestimate the intelligence of people, quite the opposite
actually i would
say that people are getting to know more and more (though whether or not
intelligence would
rise is debatable), i just think there are so many divergent paths demanding
our attention that
our perspectives have become increasingly fragmented and it's harder to
communicate an
abstract message to a large group of people using an eloquent (or not, i
suppose) method of
conveying an idea that has not been done before, is not cheesey, is relevant
and meaningful.
